Dedicated Servers explained in tiny baby terms A dedicated server is very useful for companies that plan on generating lots of traffic to their websites or plan on doing complicated software development.
A dedicated server is a server that is used exclusively by a company, hence its name.
If an individual is using a shared server then they are sharing the server space with other websites. A dedicated server controls all of the space on their server and also allows for much more control and flexibility such as allowing individuals to choose which operating system that they would like to use, what additional programs that they would like to include such as ASP, what choice of database, and etc.
A dedicated server is a type of website hosting. If an individual wants to publish their own site online then they will need some type of server to host their files and everyone needs these if they want to start a website. To me, it’s very much like renting a place to stay except online. These resources can be purchased from online networks known as hosting services.
With a hosting service a user can purchase a plan that fits their websites need to host their files on to publish to the World Wide Web. When an individual is about to launch their website online they have several different options to what type of server that they would like to choose.
There are options for free hosting, and there are options for paid ones. If you’re interested in starting an online business then you will need to go ahead and use a paid hosting so that you will have more control of your website. With free hosting in general, the individual gives up a lot of their control and are limited to what they can do with their website as a result of little resources and space. When using paid hosting, things are a lot more stable compared to that of free hosting.
Buying Server Space
When purchasing a dedicated server from a webhosting company like Hostgator for example, the individual doesn’t own the physical server; the physical server still belongs to that of the webhosting company and this process is known as co-location.
Purchasing a reliable dedicated server is now affordable to the average everyday individual. However, if the individual would have to purchase the physical server as well then the expense would be even more steeper, plus the costs to maintain it themselves.
